Washington County Envirothon
The District holds an annual environmental competition for county high school students. The Watershed Specialist coordinates the event, and the entire District staff helps ensure that things run smoothly on the days of the Study Session and Competition. The Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen's Club graciously allows us the use of their facilities for the event, and volunteers from state and local agencies instruct the testing stations.
The Washington County Envirothon was held on Thursday, May 1st at the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen's Club. Students from seven participating schools where split into thirteen teams to compete for scholarships. The scholarships were made possible by a donation from CONSOL Energy, Inc. The students competed in the categories of Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, and a Current Issue; this year's current issue was on Sustainable Agriculture. At each station the teams are tested on the subject, and the team with the highest overall score will go on to the Pennsylvania State Envirothon as the representative team from Washington County.
Special thanks to the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen's Club, Consol Energy, MarkWest Liberty Midstream & Resources and sponsors for making the 2014 Envirothon a success.
